Looking for LCI database references on natural wood products, direct forest products, or saw dust? This overview will help you to find the right references.
Product in database (reference) | Explanation |
"Natural" wood products: This contains the datasets for hardwood and softwood standing in the forest, together with the land on which trees grow and for the CO2 assimilated by the trees. They refer to the living tree before harvesting.
softwood, measured as solid wood under bark | Most important commercially used softwood species: spruce, fir, pine larch and pine. |
hardwood, measured as solid wood under bark | Commercially used hardwood species: beech, European Oak, European Ash, Sweet chestnut. |
roundwood, paraná pine from sustainable forest management, under bark | Commercially used roundwood species: eucalyptus ssp, azobe, meranti. |
"Direct" forest products: This includes the production of split wood (logs) which are generally used as fuel wood and wood chips used as fuel or primary material for industrial purposes such as particle- or fibreboard or paper. Split wood is normally made of residual wood; chips are mainly made of industrial wood. Of course, also residual wood can be chipped.
Split wood | For the production of split wood, residual wood (branches, small trees from tending or thinnign) are cut into one meter long log pieces. |
Wood Chips (from forest) | For the production of wood chips, industrial wood at forest road is fed into a mobile chopper. THIS is NOT for wood chips from industrial residual wood. |
Saw dust | |
saw dust, wet, measured as dry mass//[RoW] suction, sawdust
saw dust, loose, wet, measured as dry mass//[RoW] sawing, softwood
saw dust, loose, wet, measured as dry mass//[RoW] sawing, hardwood
residual softwood, wet//[GLO] saw dust, wet, measured as dry mass to generic market for residual softwood, wet
residual softwood, wet//[GLO] saw dust, wet, measured as dry mass to generic market for residual softwood, wet
saw dust, wet, measured as dry mass//[GLO] market for saw dust, wet, measured as dry mass
saw dust, loose, wet, measured as dry mass//[GLO] market for saw dust, loose, wet, measured as dry mass
Process in database (reference) | Explanation |
Forest processes: Providing wood at forest road requires the usage of chainsaws and transport vehicles. The type of transport vehicle used depends very much on the type of wood harvested, its sizes as well as on specific site conditions.
Hardwood, thinning/final cutting, under bark | This process yields 3 products: (1) Round wood, hardwood, u=70%, under bark at forest road, (2) Residual wood, hardwood, u=80%, under bark at forest road, (3) Industrial wood, hardwood, u=80% under bark at forest road |
Softwood, thinning/final cutting, under bark | This process yields 3 products: (1) Round wood, hardwood, u=70%, under bark at forest road, (2) Residual wood, hardwood, u=140%, under bark at forest road, (3) Industrial wood, hardwood, u=140% under bark at forest road |
Debarking, softwood, in forest | This process yields 2 products: (1) Round wood, softwood, debarked, u=70%, at forest road, (2) bark chips, softwood, u=140%, at forest road |
The figures below give some more insights into the different wood products as present in the EcoInvent database.
