New LCA database: Ecoinvent v3.8

We have published a new LCA database: Ecoinvent v3.8 in our Helix application

What is new in Helix?

  • Over 300 new datasets were added, and 700 datasets have been updated with more recent and accurate data. Further information can be found on the ecoinvent website.
  • In Helix, Ecoinvent v3.8 now provides single score results for EF 3.0 and EN15804+A2 methods. In order to see these results, go to settings, followed by calculation method. In the field LCA standard select "EF 3.0 method" or EN15804+A2 (2019) and in the field "Presentation of results" select "Full + single score"
    • IMPORTANT: Single score results are NOT available for previous database versions, such as Ecoinvent v3.6 or NMD v3.5.

Steps to select database for the usage and emissions page

If you want to use this database on the usage and emissions page, you can go to settings, followed by calculation method. In the field Standard Database select "Worldwide - Ecoinvent v 3.8 Cut-Off". 

Steps to select reference from the database

If you want to search for a reference in the database, you can insert "v3.8" in the search field followed by a keyword (i.e. electricity Europe)

When to use and NOT to use Ecoinvent v3.8?

    • Do NOT select Ecoinvent v3.8: If you are modelling products sold to the Dutch Construction sector, you should not use Ecoinvent v3.8. (As of February 2023) These kind of products shall be modelled using Ecoinvent v3.6 as it is recommended by the Dutch construction standard "Bepalingsmethode 1.1 (2022)".
    • Select Ecoinvent v3.8: Besides Dutch construction sector, in general, it is recommended to use the newest database version for any new projects. In Helix app, we recommend to select EF 3.0 method or EN15802+A2 (2019) as the LCIA method to calculate impacts using Ecoinvent v3.8. To select this LCIA methods, you can go to settings, followed by calculation method. In the field LCA standard select "EF 3.0 method" or EN15804+A2 (2019).
