Have you completed your footprint and want to know more about your results? This guide is designed to help you enhance your environmental models by identifying environmental hotspots, testing improvement strategies, and making insightful comparisons using Mobius. Follow the steps (with hyperlinks) below or download the PDF guide!

Step 1: Identify environmental impact hotspots

Pro tip - Viewing results:

  • Go to the model view and try the different impact categories (e.g., climate change, toxicity, global warming potential, etc.). How does this impact results?

  • Go to the bar chart view and filter for impact objects with values > 10%. What does this tell you about your results?

  • Go to the donut chart and try the different units to view the results. How does this visualization of your product’s climate impact affect your understanding?

Note - Identifying hotspots: Determine the environmental impact hotspots in your model. There is no one way to determine what items in your model are hotspots - it’s up to you to determine this! We suggest setting threshold criteria to determine the level of impact that constitutes a hotspot. For example,

  • Percent contribution: Any item contributing more than a certain percentage (e.g., 10%, 20%).

  • Cumulative impact: Items that, when combined, account for a significant portion (e.g., 80% - Pareto principle) of the total impact.

Pro tip - Brainstorming improvement scenarios: Brainstorm strategies to address these environmental hotspots. Come up with 2-5 strategies to improve the environmental impact of your product.

  • Feasibility: Can emissions be (feasibly) reduced in these hotspots? Some hotspots might not be easily addressed in practice.

  • Actions: What actions are needed to reduce emissions in this hotspot? Who are the key stakeholders in these hotspot areas?

  • Improvement strategies: Consider alternative sourcing decisions (e.g., sustainable procurement). Consider ecodesign options (e.g., low-carbon materials). Can you make (slight) changes to your product design to reduce the climate change impact?

Step 2: Test improvement strategies

Note - Using the Comparison feature: The Comparisons feature in Mobius can be used in two ways:

  1. To identify hotspots by highlighting the differences between two products

  2. To compare the potential of improvement scenarios.

In this context, use the Comparisons tool in the second manner to compare the two improvement scenarios you created to each other.
